ABOUT NORWAY

Norway is a Scandinavian country with approximately 5.2 million people and has numerous times been named one of the best places to live and/or visit. (Scandinavia consists of Norway, Sweden and Denmark; 3 Nordic countries located in Europe.)

Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. It’s known for its green spaces and museums. Many of these are on the Bygdøy Peninsula, including the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum, with Viking ships from the 9th century. Most of Norway's government offices and buildings are in Oslo. Subsequently, the city enjoys a stable and robust economy in Europe.

Around 1049, King Harald Hardråde founded Oslo. However, archaeological research revealed Christian burials from before 1000, indicating early urban settlement. Håkon V (1299 – 1319) was the first king to reside in the city permanently. He started the construction of the Akershus Fortress.

The town of Lillestrøm started with a steam sawmill fed by the river. The name Lillestrøm means “the little part of the stream,” in the language of medieval Norway called Old Norse. One train connects central Lillestrøm directly to Oslo and a high-speed train travels to Oslo’s international airport, Gardermoen.

Language: The national and official language of Norway is Norwegian.  English is also widely spoken in Oslo.

Currency: The currency used in Norway is the Krone (NOK).  For the current rate in your currency go to www.xe.com.

Voltage: Oslo operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.  Oslo uses two types of plugs, Plug Type C (Europlug) and Plug Type F (German Schuko). These types of plugs have two round pins that are placed 19mm apart from each other.

Climate: Autumn is a lovely time in Oslo, with highs close to 16C/60F and lows at 10C/50F.
